What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a natural modality used within the scope of traditional Chinese medicine. It utilizes pre-sterilized, disposable, one-time-use only needles to influence the body's innate ability to heal itself.
What does acupuncture feel like?
I do not practice under the guise, the stronger the stimulation, the more effective the treatment. I have not seen that to be the case. In fact, many points you will not feel or if you do feel there is a range of sensations that is considered normal. You may feel a sensation of heaviness like a stack of pennies on a point, some points may feel warm or itchy, other points may feel like a dull radiating ache. Rarely, a point may feel a bit bee sting-ish. If any points are uncomfortable or prevent you from relaxing, we can back up and reduce the intensity on that particular point.
I practice a technique utilized by Japanese acupuncturists to significantly reduce needle sensation and promote healing. Most patients find the sensation of acupuncture to be deeply relaxing both mentally and physically.
How many treatments will I need?
The benefits of acupuncture are cumulative, so more then one treatment is likely necessary. For acute conditions you can expect to have a total of 8 to 10 treatments, but you will usually begin to feel relief after just the first few. Chronic conditions may take longer to respond, depending on the type, severity, and duration of the condition. I recommend that preventative treatments and treatments for general well-being are on a monthly or seasonal basis.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. Acupuncture is used by millions of Americans every year. Acupuncturists are required to undergo extensive education, including detailed study of human anatomy and training in Clean Needle Technique. I have passed comprehensive national board examinations administered by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and by the California State Board. I am licensed to practice in both California and Washington state. As required by law, I use pre-sterilized, disposable, single-use needles to ensure your complete safety.
